Care & Longevity
A piece of MESO jewelry is made to be lived with. This guide explains how to care for solid 18k gold, French vermeil, sterling silver, lapis lazuli, and carnelian, so each piece can be worn often, repaired when needed, and kept across generations.
I
Everyday Jewelry Care
The care of fine jewelry is part of the pleasure of owning it. A soft cloth passed over a piece at the end of the day, a moment of attention as you set it on your nightstand, the habit of dressing before fastening a chain. These small gestures, more than anything else, are what carry a piece across years.
Three habits are especially useful for preserving the surface, shine, and setting of your jewelry:
- Apply skincare, fragrance, and hair products first, let them settle, then add your jewelry.
- Give your pieces a soft wipe with a clean polishing cloth after wear.
- Store each piece separately so metal surfaces and stones do not rub against one another.
Remove jewelry before swimming, showering, exercising intensely, sleeping, or using household cleaning products. These moments expose metal, stones, stringing, and clasps to moisture, impact, tension, or chemical residue.

Gold, Vermeil & Silver
Solid 18k Gold
Solid 18k gold is the most resilient material we work with. It does not tarnish or fade, and with reasonable care it is made to last beyond a single lifetime. You can wear it through most ordinary moments of life, while still protecting it from sharp impact, abrasive surfaces, and unnecessary chemical exposure.
Gold is a noble metal, but it is not indestructible. Prongs, clasps, links, and settings can move with years of wear, especially on pieces set with stones. We recommend storing gold jewelry separately and having stone settings checked periodically by a jeweler. For cleaning, use warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush, then pat dry and finish with a soft polishing cloth.
French Vermeil
French vermeil is sterling silver finished with a thick layer of 18-carat gold, measuring at least 5 microns. It carries the warmth and depth of gold, with a presence that invites regular wear and a little more attention than solid gold.
To care for vermeil jewelry, keep it away from chlorine, salt water, perfume, alcohol-based products, and household cleaners. The everyday rhythm is simple: jewelry on after your morning routine, off before a swim or a long shower, then wiped gently with a soft cloth at night.
Over time, vermeil may soften into a natural patina that reflects how the piece has been worn. A few passes with a suitable polishing cloth can revive brightness. When the gold layer eventually becomes thinner from wear, the piece can be re-plated. Write to us and we will guide you through the repair or re-plating process.
Sterling Silver
Sterling silver has a life of its own. It may darken when set aside for long stretches, then brighten again with wear and careful polishing. A wipe with a polishing cloth keeps the surface luminous. For deeper care, use warm water and mild soap, then dry the piece thoroughly with a soft cloth.
Silver worn often usually needs less attention, as the gentle friction of skin and fabric helps keep the surface bright. When storing silver for longer periods, make sure the piece is completely dry and keep it in a soft pouch or cloth, ideally away from humidity.
III
Lapis Lazuli, Carnelian & Natural Stones
Each natural stone has its own temperament. MESO pieces may include stones such as lapis lazuli and carnelian, chosen for their historical resonance, depth of color, and presence against gold or silver.
Lapis Lazuli
Lapis lazuli has a porous structure, which means it prefers to stay dry and away from soap, perfume, oils, and prolonged contact with water. To care for lapis lazuli jewelry, wipe the stone with a soft, dry cloth after wear. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaning, and abrasive polishing compounds.
Carnelian
Carnelian is harder and more forgiving than lapis lazuli, but it should still be protected from harsh chemicals, sharp impact, and prolonged direct sunlight. A soft cloth, or a brief rinse in cool water followed by careful drying, is usually enough to keep carnelian luminous.
A general note on natural stones
Natural stones can be sensitive to sudden temperature changes, impact, and chemical exposure. When a piece is set with stones, set it aside before activities that could put pressure on the setting, and have it checked periodically to confirm that the stones remain secure.
IV
How to Store Your Jewelry
Keep your jewelry in a cool, dry place, separated piece by piece so surfaces stay smooth and stones do not scratch one another. A drawer away from direct light, heat, and humidity is ideal. A soft pouch or cloth adds quiet protection when several pieces are stored together.
Before storing jewelry, make sure each piece is dry and free from perfume, skincare, or moisture. Chains should be fastened before being put away, so they are less likely to knot or catch. Pieces with lapis lazuli, carnelian, or delicate settings should be stored with enough space around them to avoid pressure and impact.
V
Repairs, Re-plating & Checks
If a piece leaves marks on your skin, the cause is often residue from skincare, perfume, humidity, or natural skin acidity reacting with the metal surface. A gentle clean and polish resolves it in many cases.
If a stone feels loose, a clasp no longer closes securely, a chain has been pulled, or the surface of a vermeil piece begins to thin, stop wearing the piece until it has been checked. Continuing to wear damaged jewelry can turn a small repair into a larger one.

A Note on Longevity
The objects that have reached us from the ancient world endured because they were considered. Wrapped in cloth, set aside in safe places, returned to with care.
With a soft cloth, a quiet drawer, and a moment at the end of the day, your MESO piece will be ready for the years and the generations ahead.
